Five-star hotels are great, so long as you don't have to spend 5-star prices. Sometimes you get truly fortunate, and spot a real bargain in an upmarket hotel that would generally be correct out of your cost-variety. I remember a fantastic riverside Hotel in Bangkok where clearly they had a scarcity of bookings at the time my spouse and I were travelling through. We completely loved our space, and the breakfast on their terrace was to die for. But if we'd emptied the mini-bar we'd have been broke in a week! Luckily there was a convenience shop within walking length; problem solved.

I've also slept in one or two pretty terrible establishments. Difficult beds, bad meals, noise.
