Buy a guidebook. Just 1. There are most likely five-ten titles per destination. Go to a bookstore and breeze via the introduction of the various titles. Ignore the pictures. I know of one guidebook business that used these amazing glossy pictures, but their information is frequently at the expense of locals who live there (ie: telling peopel to hike via private land to get to an unsafe beach Bangkok Hotel Booking ). Choose the guide whose writer seems like somebody you would trust. Is the tone funny? Fascinating? Does the individual reside there and does that make a difference to you? Do you want a guide that 1000's of people use so that you will consume at the secure eating places as all the vacationers or do you want to discover the unexplored places?
See, today we have the world at our fingertips. I can Twitter to discover a kid-friendly Hotel in Bangkok or publish my hunt on Facebook. I can do as savvy travelers have done for a long time and buy a guidebook--but which 1? Do I go for the backpacker favorite? The hiker's bible? Or the one for families? And as soon as I purchase my guidebook, I can e-mail the writer and ask for even much more guidance. I can search the zillions on on-line travel magazines, newspapers, chats. I can even search You Tube for videos of train rides via southern Thailand.
